Stiperstones Trust
In an orthodox monastery or convent, liturgy and prayer go hand in hand with work and silence. Each has its own
unique character and emphasis.

In the Monastery of St Antony and St Cuthbert, Christ’s call to hallow God’s Name that God’s kingdom come, is
at the heart of everything. We seek to hallow God’s Name on earth just as it is hallowed in heaven. This in turn
hallows the earth which becomes a heavenly earth and an earthly heaven. We all yearn for this hallowing. It heals
our hearts. It brings light into our lives. It undoes the confusions and divisions within us and between us. So here
we pray for the hallowing and healing of all.
Archimandrite Sophrony wrote several
books and had many devoted
followers. He laid great emphasis upon
the ‘person’ and the ‘personal’, and
was able to bring to light what was
unique in the process of each person
he met.

When Fr Silouan first met Fr Sophrony
in 1965, the latter pointed to the
mystery of I AM, the mystery of the
Holy Name, revealed on Mount Sinai. I
AM WHO I AM, EHYEH ASHER
EHYEH. When Fr Silouan became a
monk in the last years of Fr
Sophrony’s life, this teaching was
given central emphasis, cutting
through all confusion and division.

Continuing Legacy: the NAME
This legacy of the Holy Name and awakening to the revealed I AM, in the I AM sayings in St John’s Gospel,
continues to inspire the work of Fr Silouan and the life of the monastery. It is inexhaustible. And it is beyond us as
well as within us, calling us out of ourselves into the life of the Holy Trinity. This legacy is the focus and the ground
of all that happens here.

Orthodoxy has many treasures, and Fr Sophrony imparted many different legacies to his many grateful
questioners. His profound insight into the personal inspires gratitude that celebrates difference, and the unity at
the heart of difference, in the image of God.

If you would like to explore the implications of this spiritual legacy more deeply, contact Fr Silouan.
Fr Silouan in front of the monastery
So, when Fr Silouan came to the Monastery of St Antony and St Cuthbert, two hermit saints, he brought with
him the prayer of the Name, the mystery of I AM, and the Name hallowing, as in the Lord’s Prayer and the Jesus
Prayer. This legacy has inspired retreats held in the monastery and elsewhere, and quiet days for groups and
individuals. And it continues to inspire Fr Silouan in everything he does, to the extent that this is possible.
